Aromatic smoke from sage, incense, and palo santo clear negative energy from an environment. Smudging is the ritual of burning sacred herbs and medicines by Indigenous peoples to remove negative energy and cleanse. Similarly, churches and temples burn frankincense, myrrh, and nagchampa incense. A regular practice of cleaning unwanted energy can be uplifting. Here are some pointers:
Use white or blue sage. Do not use culinary or cooking sage as it is not the same.
Before beginning, set the intention of clearing yourself and your space of any energy that is no longer needed. Say what you would like to invite in place of the cleared stale energy (blessings, love, abundance, etc)
Sage yourself when you feel scattered, sad, overwhelmed, or disjointed. Light the tip of the sage stick. When it begins to smoke, blow out the flame. Holding it is one hand waft the stick in the air beginning at the crown and then slowly making your way to your feet. Make sure you sage the front and back of your body and underneath the feet. You can also do this technique on others.
Sage your home regularly. Don't forget corners and entryways. It is a good idea to open a window or door to encourage the exit of the cleared residual energy.
When you are done, you can place the sage or palo santo in a fire-safe container and allow it to continue to clear the space. Abalone shells and soapstone bowls are commonly used containers. To extinguish the flame for later use, place the smoking tip in a bowl of sand or under running water.
Sage is very pungent. If you don't like the smell, consider purchasing sage mixed with rosemary, lavender, rose petals, or resin from dragon blood trees. Alternatively, palo santo, or holy wood, has a sweet aroma with the clearing properties as sage. Palo santo is commonly used in South American cultures.
